# History
The movie theater, located on the west side of the street between Golden Gate and Turk, was established in 1984 by Allen Michaan and has been operated by Landmark since 1991. Initially featuring four screens with a seating capacity of approximately 300, the theater faced the possibility of closure in 2017 when news emerged of its potential shuttering due to negotiations between Landmark and the landlord.
Despite uncertainty, the theater remained open on a month-to-month lease with profit sharing. However, in 2020, the San Francisco Neighborhood Theatre Foundation secured a ten-year lease and announced plans to invest $1.2 million in improvements. While Landmark Theatres continued to operate the complex, it underwent significant refurbishment and reopened on November 19, 2021, following a renovation.
Throughout its history, the theater has been a focal point of community concern, with various reports indicating potential closures and transformations. Despite initial fears of closure, the theater’s future was secured through the intervention of the San Francisco Neighborhood Theatre Foundation, ensuring its continued operation and providing a renewed space for cinema enthusiasts. The renovation and reopening in 2021 marked a new chapter for the theater, reflecting its resilience and ongoing significance within the San Francisco cultural landscape.
